Barnes Warwick Heating Services ltd give their top tips on how to save energy on your heating and save money on your bills by making a few changes to your home.

In the UK saving energy starts with heating as two thirds of energy being used by homes in the UK is for heating and accounts to half of our utility bills! Barnes Warwick Heating Services ltd have been helping homes across Torbay, Teignbridge & South Hams save money on their heating for many years, here are 4 of our top tips:

1) Upgrade Your Boiler To An Energy Efficient Condensing Boiler

Firstly, we recommend that you upgrade your old boilers to a condensing boiler which are much more energy efficient.

It is estimated that around 16% of the world’s annual CO2 emissions come from non-condensing boilers and so in a bid to decrease this the UK made it legislation that all new boilers installed in a property must be condensing boilers.

You will be able to recognise a condensing boiler by the white pipe coming out of the boiler which connects to a drain outside the building.

The images below show the differences in non-condensing and condensing.

2) Save Energy With Thermostatic Radiator Valves

Secondly all households should have thermostatic radiator valves added to their radiators.

These provide individual room temperature control to minimise wasted energy. For rooms that are not being used so often you can turn down the TRV to help move heat to places that are more regularly used such lounge.

It is also part of UK legislation that any system upgrade will require thermostatic radiator valves to be installed to radiators.

3) Save Energy By Keeping Your Heating System Clean

Thirdly, we recommend that you keep your heating system clean for maximum efficiency by installing a filter to your boiler and getting your heating system power flushed every 5 or 6 years.

Over time your radiators will build up with sludge and debris which can stop your radiators from working properly, thus causing your boiler to use up more energy to reach the required temperature.

We use Magnaclean filters and for power flushing we use the Adey MagnaCleanse machine to clean the heating system which uses strong magnets to attract the metallic debris in the radiators.

4) Save More Energy With A Smart Thermostat

Finally, we recommend that you install a programmable room thermostat to help you have more control over your heating.

We recommend for greater control and money saving to go for a smart thermostat such as the popular Google Nest Learning thermostat.

These are more efficient and smarter than your regular thermostats because programmable thermostats will simply continue cycling through their schedule even if nobody’s home. Nest thermostats can prevent this waste by automatically detecting when everyone’s gone, using Home/Away Assist. When no one’s home, your Nest thermostat will set itself to your Eco Temperatures to help save energy.

Nest thermostats use their unique Nest Sense and Auto-Schedule features to create a dynamic, comfortable schedule that’s personalised for you and your home.

These are easy to install and can be purchased from around £150 and are a great addition to your home.
